01. What Is Gum Grafting?
Gum grafting is a periodontal procedure that adds tissue to areas where the gumline has receded and exposed the tooth root. Recession can happen for several reasons, including brushing too hard, untreated gum disease, teeth grinding, or simply genetics. Left alone, exposed roots are more vulnerable to sensitivity, decay, and further bone loss.
Types of Gum Grafts We Offer

What Happens If Gum Recession Goes Untreated
As recession progresses, more of the tooth root becomes exposed, increasing sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet foods. Exposed roots are also softer than enamel, making them more prone to decay. Over time, untreated recession can contribute to bone loss around the tooth and, in advanced cases, tooth loss. Addressing recession early with gum grafting is a far simpler treatment than managing its complications later.
02. Your Gum Grafting Process at Riverwalk Dental
Step 1. Consultation and Evaluation
Dr. Gholami examines the extent of your recession, measures the affected areas, and identifies the likely cause. We discuss which graft type is right for your case and review your options for sedation.
Step 2. The Grafting Procedure
Depending on the graft type, Dr. Gholami takes tissue from the roof of your mouth or nearby gum tissue and secures it over the exposed root. The procedure is done under local anesthesia.
Step 3. Healing and Aftercare
Most patients heal within one to two weeks, with soft food recommended during the first several days. Dr. Gholami will give you specific aftercare instructions to protect the graft while it integrates.
